Music Review: Pool (2016) by Porches

Given my absolute adoration for all things EDM and Electronica, Pool, released by Porches seemed like a no brainer. But what grabbed my attention to checking it out on Spotify and later buying on CD was that on that first moment I listened to it I was utterly shocked by how exquisitely produced it was. I mean the creative aspects were also key because without that no matter how well produced something is it wouldn't matter, but this is very noticeable sonically.

Strengths:

  • Exquisitely well produced. Both the mixing and mastering engineers have good sense of taste in fulfilling the vision of what Aaron Maine wanted his music to sound like.
Thanks go to mixing engineer: Chris Coady at Sunset Sound
While another thanks goes to mastering engineer: Greg Calby at Sterling Sound
  • Ground-breaking it is. Electronica is getting redefined.
  • Lyrics are contemplative albeit confusing.
  • Musicians involved have very developed music playing skills and it shows in this record.

Weaknesses:

  • About 4 weak songs. There is a total of 12 songs.

About Porches

Porches is Aaron Maine, Kevin Farrant, Seiya Jewell, Cameron Wisch, and Maya Laner.

Pool (released this year) marks a major step forward for Porches frontman Aaron Maine—as an evolving singer/songwriter, and as a nascent producer. Written and recorded almost entirely in his Manhattan apartment, Pool, is an elegant set of gorgeous synth-driven pop songs. The album is a fully immersive listening experience highlighting Maine’s insightfully filtered melancholy.
