Review of Sunborn Rising by Aaron Safronoff

A distant world of great trees.
Floating on an ocean surrounding a star.

The flotilla forests cycle light and water through their boughs into their lush canopies. But the once vibrant treescape has grown dark, slowly, subtly over many generations. The civilization of creatures living among the boughs believe the darkness is normal. That is, until one willful young girl named Barra discovers the hidden journal of her late father.

On first look, Sunborn Rising, starts out with the type of heroine character you'd expect. A bit rebellious and wild but as I read I discovered I quite liked Barra our main character. The way she has all this determination to get what she wants and the way she looks out for her friends. In particular, how she is willing to brave things first before her friends do to protect them.

Needless to say, Sunborn Rising has strong characterization! A very good thing, indeed, given the grand scheme of Fantasy mythology which can get hard to follow at times. While this is true thankfully it has illustrations even in full color to help the reader.

It's a read that presents its issues but that is no less enjoyable given author Aaron Safronoff's noticeable effort. His effort bleeds through enough that I found myself really getting fond of those in this first book of the Sunborn Rising series. While not for everyone I can definitely see this occupying a select audience who appreciates monstrous characterization and deep, deep lush Fantasy realms.
Overall: Touching read
Genre: Fantasy
