Big Fan! Author Interview with Gillian Summers

Gillian Summer's Bio:
Gillian Summers is a pseudonym for Berta Platas and Michele Roper, a Georgia writing duo. They primarily write YA/Fantasy creations.

Author Interview

Questions and Answers

 1. Thanks for letting me interview you, Berta and Michele! I really love your books and it means a lot. So first off I wanted to ask, I'm not sure if everyone who reads you has noticed but I did and that is for this seventh book in the Faire Folk Saga you guys did not seem to go with your regular publisher, Flux, but instead opted to self-publish via Amazon. Is that right and why is that?

We learned a big lesson when we sold the first three books. We were ready to sell just the first book, and were thrilled when Flux picked up all three, but we thought that would be the end of it. We were already writing another book, when our editor asked us to please submit our ideas for the next three books. We had to do a lot of planning to make sure the story continued in a way that made sense, and then went ahead and planned what would happen beyond that. Flux decided not to continue the series, but we heard from so many fans that after some thought, created Dark Woods Press to release them ourselves. Keelie’s story comes to a natural ending in these books.

 2. Now let's get into the book details. With Queen of the Faire there were a lot of mentions of Herne, the nature god but no Herne appearance; does this mean we will see him in the future? Or is this wishful thinking on my part?

You will definitely see Herne, who is a major player in Book 8. I can’t say more without giving it away. He’ll be in the ninth book, too.

 3. Finally while I personally think you guys will continue more of the Faire Folk Saga an official confirmation is still great. Can we expect more books or is this it?

Two more books are in the works for the Faire Folk Saga. We have an offshoot series that we’ve been talking about for a couple of years. The heroine is the younger sister of the tattoo artist who lives near the Dread Forest, and it takes place at the same time as the end of The Goblin Curse, when all the magic bursts free and is visible to the world, before it gets reined in again.

 4. I know you guys are very active in book fairs thanks to your blog (https://magicalforest.wordpress.com/) especially in the Georgia area so how has that been going with your most recent one? Share the details. Anything funny or memorable?

Book festivals are always fun. Our favorite is the Decatur Book Festival, which (alas) takes place on Labor Day Weekend, the same weekend as Dragon*Con, which is our absolute favorite event to attend (except for Renaissance Fairs). At the last Decatur Book Festival we kept running into a girl, about thirteen or so, who’d bought a copy of Tree Shepherd’s Daughter at our book stall. Every time, she had her nose in the book. I wish I’d taken a picture of her, it was so cool!  It’s always neat to see your book “in the wild.” About four other people came by to buy the book because of her. She never returned to our spot, or we would have given her a free copy of the next one for all the free advertisement!

 5. Gillian Summers is a pseudonym for you the writing duo Berta Platas and Michele Roper but what are your separate writing projects right now? If any.

You bet we’re writing. We are compulsive scribblers!  Michele’s been super busy. She has published a hilarious book about a Goth girl who is forced to spend a summer with her grandmother (she calls her Granola), helping at her beachside surf shop. She uses extreme SPF to keep her ghostly pallor, and eventually we find out why she hates the beach so much. Let’s just say she wasn’t always a Goth, and she runs into the hottie she liked the last time she had her toes in the sand.  Whitney Wilbur Wipes Out is available for Kindle on Amazon.

Her latest book, Jessie’s Magical Ride, also on Amazon, is funny and romantic YA about Jessie Fairchilde, a girl who has the worst 16th birthday ever.  She fails her driver's license, and instead of the empowering clean start she’s worked herself up to – breaking up with her boyfriend -- he dumps her. Back home, she expects to get a restored 1966 red Mustang for her birthday, but instead, her metal-working dad gives her a tank-sized 1955 Pontiac as a “project car”, and her mom goes out of town and leaves her to baby sit her little brothers. Things couldn’t get worse, right? Until she discovers that her family is cursed, and she’s brought the curse back to life.

Berta is working simultaneously on a funny romance and a post-apocalyptic mystery set in the north Georgia mountains. The funny romance will be published this year, so she’s spending most of her time working on that one. She’s also got plans for a sequel to her novel Lucky Chica, about a girl who wins the biggest lottery prize in US history – and how it does not solve all of her problems.

More Bloggers Wanted for Book & Movie Dimension a Blog

Hi, guys. I have some exciting news. Given my high interest in continuing to move this blog forward I'm looking for people interested in blogging on here. Precisely 3 more bloggers. You don't really need any experience whatsoever but I do need individuals interested in books, movies, anime, and or doing cosmetics reviews.

If you like any one of these things or all of them get in contact. The best people for this position are people who wholeheartedly believe they know how to spot trends in Entertainment. In addition, I'm looking for one particular blogger out of the three who has an interest in doing beauty reviews. For this you'll need to have a good camera and be able to post good pictures.

Other Requirements

  • Have some free time on your hands. Be able to respond to my email messages every 3 days or so and get back to me quickly.
  • Have some capable writing skills. I'm looking for eloquent writing or people who can write with humor: sarcastic or witty is fine. Either one.
  • Be able to review books, movies, anime, or cosmetics. Each blogger will have an assigned theme, although you can negotiate other areas you will like to write about. Just know they can only be in these themes. Oh, and the areas you can cover will depend on your level of expertise in a given topic.
  • Be ok with contacting me about whatever you are planning to blog about before you blog about it. This includes giving me a look at what you're going to post about in text format.
  • Have a Twitter account or be willing to create one. Online presence is very important in blogging.
  • Capable of writing fluent English.
  • Capability of doing creative posts every once in a while. We'll talk more about this later. Has to do with sharing a little about your own perspective on here.
  • Be willing to blog on here for free and agree that the content set forth here will remain here and that you're simply blogging for fun and for the benefit of helping authors promote their books, plus helping readers discover new things in Entertainment.
Side-notes
  • No. You do not have to live in the USA to apply. You merely have to be able to write and understand English. As well as have a Twitter account with a personal profile photo of yourself, which I'll need you to mention in email. So make sure you create your Twitter account before you send me an email message about wanting to be a co-blogger. Link included to your account so I can check it.
Perks
  • You'll get free books to review whether in print or e-book form.
  • Meeting new authors you might have never heard about.
  • Be able to leverage influence to contact authors and get interviews.
Contact Info
My Gravatar Profile. Please go to my Gravatar profile and there you will find my email information so that you can contact me. Subject line when emailing: Book & Movie Dimension Blogging Position

If you agree to all this then I will love to hear from you. I look forward to our possible future interactions!

Let's Talk About my Deeper Foray into Affiliate Marketing

First off I guess I should address what affiliate marketing is in the first place. In case some of you aren't sure what it is. It's basically a form of online marketing that allows website owners and blog owners the ability to make money off their promoting efforts on behalf of companies. You promote their products or services on your blog with ads and if a visitor on your blog makes a purchase then that counts as a referred sale. You get the credit and you get paid. You're basically becoming a marketer just all online.

And while I have been blogging since 2011 and did start with Amazon Associates as my first affiliate program ever, I don't think I was ever serious about it. Many of you know that I never pushed too hard on that end but as I have gotten serious about what blogging means to me I feel that I kind of do want to make money off my blogging efforts so I'll feel more like a professional blogger this way. That doesn't mean that this is my top priority. Of course not! First and foremost I want to write content that can be beneficial to you my readers whether it be in book review recommendations and or other Entertainment discoveries.

At the end of the day, my blogging is not about making money but what I can offer you instead but at the same time I want to make money. In other words, I want to do both at the same time.

Even if it is too much to ask. I want it all but this will only be possible with your help. Therefore really nothing has changed. I'll still be working hard on being the first to discover the next hottest thing in Entertainment wherever it may hide: books, movies, music, whatever. That aside, here are the companies I'm currently representing. Please be aware that I would never endorse companies I did not believe in.

My Double Life by Janette Rallison E-book Free March 24-26th

This free Kindle offer lasts from March 24, 2016 to March 26, 2016. Brought to you by Janette Rallison otherwise known as C.J. Hill.
Her whole life, Alexia Garcia has been told that she looks just like rock star Kari Kingsley. But being a famous person's doppelganger hasn't turned out to be the teen fantasy you'd expect. People look at Alexia like she must be as ditzy as her counterpart. One day when Alexia's photo filters through the Internet, she's offered a job as Kari's double. This would seem like the opportunity of a lifetime--or at least a way to make some fast cash--but Alexia's mother has always warned her against celebrities. They can't be trusted. They'll use her.

Alexia can't resist the siren call of fame. Who could say no to Hollywood, hot guys, and . . . um, did we mention hot guys already? She flies off to L.A. and gets immersed in a celebrity life. Not only does she have to get used to getting anything she wants, she also romances the hottest lead singer on the charts and finds out that her own father is a singing legend. Through it all, Alexia must stay true to herself, which is hard to do when you are pretending to be somebody else!

About Janette Rallison (C.J. Hill)

C.J. Hill is a pseudonym. Her real name is Janette Rallison has five children and she also likes to write romantic comedy because there is enough angst in real life, but there's a drastic shortage on both humor and romance.

Review of Queen of the Faire (The Faire Folk Saga #7) by Gillian Summers

Overview
After the Goblin Wars that almost outed the elves, fae, and other non-human races, Keelie Heartwood is ready to escape the drama and hang out with Dad. A new Renaissance Faire in the North Georgia Mountains sounds perfect for checking out hunky jousters instead of memorizing more elven lore.

When the faire's manager, the draconic Finch, offers Keelie the chance to be Queen of the Faire, it sounds like the perfect job. Or is it? Strange disappearances and a sense of pending evil casts shadows over the medieval fun, and it's up to Keelie and her unique blend of magic to discover the truth.

Recommended: Yes. I believe so with every fiber of my being.

                                About Queen of the Faire
Recommended Ages: 15 and Up
Kindle Edition: 377 pgs.
Published: August 30th 2014 by Dark Woods Press
For This Review:  *Self-Provided Kindle E-book copy for Review*

It pains me to know that I in fact only recently read the latest Gillian Summers book in my beloved Faire Folk Saga. It was released back in August 2014 but that year had many new things in store for me that I could never find the time to get to Queen of the Faire. That said, I promise that there was never a time I wasn't fully thinking about Queen of the Faire. I was always fully aware of it and how much I wanted to read it.

Thankfully I have, finally! And am I glad I have continued to read Gillian Summers. This following line was worth it all but OK so was the rest of the book. Go, Gillian Summers!

"Don't you think you were being too charming?" Keelie asked.

"I was being nice". Dad grinned, and then he laughed. "I'll be more subdued and somber like Elianard".

Keelie made a face. "As if you could".-Page 330 of 377 on my Amazon Fire 7 (Kindle e-reading)

Reuniting into the newest troubles Keelie faces as the chosen handler of a magical Compendium at an equally magical Renaissance faire was glorious. Even as I struggled to get into the habit of reading (hello reading rut) I am glad Gillian Summers can ease that transition in me. Reading as I was, it was intriguing to see Keelie handle an unexpected job and a possible new romance with a human for the very first time after a tough breakup with her old boyfriend who some of you may know as Sean O' the Woods. But then again good thing because I always thought the guy was too arrogant for his own good and I hate arrogance.

And yeah, I did notice some of the grammar errors to which I usually cringe. But you know, whatever. This is Gillian Summers a writing duo that cannot be replicated and that is why the grammatical errors all but disappeared as I read. My thoughts? Incredible read. Yet again, go Gillian Summers.
Overall: Amazing read!
Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult, Faeries, Elves, Dragons, Nature Gods

About Gillian Summers

A forest dweller, Gillian was raised by gympsies at a Renaissance Faire. She likes knitting, hot soup, costumes, and adores oatmeal, especially in the form of cookies. She loathes concrete, but tolerates it if it means attending a science fiction convention. She can be found at her North Georgia cabin, where she lives with her large, friendly dogs, obnoxious cats, and occasional fairy.

My Second Package Arrived from YesStyle

Here it is, the Contrast Collar sweater! This completes the items I was set to receive from YesStyle. I am very happy with my purchase. The fit looks good and I do like the design even in person. Plus, the material is wearable unlike some knits that tend to be itchy.

Has these small cute pockets. Nice detail.

Me wearing the thing. Sorry about the book postcards. Tara Sim sent them to me, a YA author and just got them today along with the sweater's arrival.

Free! Kindle Alert: Author C.J. Hill (Janette Rallison) makes Blue Eyes and Other Teenage Hazards Free for a time

Blue Eyes and Other Teenage Hazards by Janette Rallison

This free Kindle offer lasts from now to March 18, 2016. Brought to you by Janette Rallison otherwise known as C.J. Hill.
Cassidy knows everything about Chad--everything, that is, except how to get him to notice her. Someday, somehow, she vows, those deep blue eyes are going to look her way. But romance is more complicated than all her teen novels have led her to believe. Guys. Is there any understanding them? Is there a psychology behind the reason they love their cars? A methodology to their fist bumps? It's a subject she doesn't mind researching.

About C.J. Hill

Have a good day and hopefully you can find a lucky 4-leaf clover. But if you can't, then go enter the March 2016 New Release Giveaway going on now. My First Shopping Experience with YesStyle

First off I cannot really recall how I first came upon YesStyle online. But I think it was when I was searching for clothes and shoes online that fit into styles I would like to see myself wearing and YesStyle had it all. They had all the clothes I consider fashionable and I was alarmed at how I had finally found an online store with actually adorable clothes for once. And afterwards I went through blogs online who had reviewed the site. The blog that I got the most help from was My Seoul Obsession, a blogger who regularly writes reviews about her latest KPop music buys.

Since I trusted her opinion after a while I went ahead and ordered these Army Green Brogue Oxford Shoes I had wanted off the site. And considering Spring and Summer is pretty close at hand, well Spring is already here I also bought these Light Blue Perforated Buckled Flat Sandals. Let's just say I had ones like these in my childhood and I wanted another pair but more sophisticated.

Throughout the ordering process I felt rather nervous because I wasn't sure if I would ever get my packages since another item I ordered got cancelled making me think they might easily cancel others items in the orders I made. Not exactly fun what with the whole waiting involved.

Yet despite these delays I eventually got my packages. Today in fact! Let me explain that I am still so happy about my new shoes and navy cardigan.

Army Green Brogue Oxford Shoes are of a deep luxurious color and the make of the shoes has a flawless design.

And let's not forget the material of these shoes. They are of strong stuff and yet the finish of the shoes is smooth. I have to wonder who worked on these carefully crafted shoes. Someone in Hong Kong whoever this person or individuals are. The shoes are stunning!

Size 38 that would be size 7 in US sizes. Fit me perfectly!

Oh, and the Light Blue Perforated Buckled Flat Sandals. Kind of like in my childhood. Just a tad different in terms of style and color. These like the Oxfords have great craftsmanship. I'm in love. But then again I do have a thing for good shoes. And am I lucky to have come across YesStyle.

The site does give you what it promises and though they are on the expensive side I think the type of clothes and shoes they offer are more than worthy of that heavy cost. Simply because other sites cannot provide their style and fashion sense, even if the customer service is all but missing (disclosure: Getting ahold of customer service is hard. Most messages you send won't get a reply, probably because they are too busy).

I don't know despite them not showing themselves in customer service I still like their service and offerings. It's so good that lack of available customer service response isn't too detrimental since they are at least making sure they get the stuff you bought shipped out to you.

YesStyle has adorable styled clothing. They are a Hong Kong based online retailer who offers free shipping on orders over $35. They can ship to the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Macau, and China. However, they can ship certain items that aren't jewelry, accessories, lifestyle, or beauty to more countries, see YesStyle here.
